Survivor’s Standouts: I Finally “Did It” Edition

facebook

Yesterday, I did something I thought I’d never do (sounds dramatic, no?). For the past few months, I’ve been debating whether having a facebook page for the site makes sense.  I know a lot of people use and like facebook, but for a long time (OK, not that long, since the blog has only been in existence since October) I was sort of a, “hold out”.

Because I don’t really like or enjoy using facebook in my personal life, I figured I probably wouldn’t enjoy using facebook for SDS. But at the risk of being the only kid on the block without a page, I’m going to give it a go and see how it turns out. Truth is, I don’t know much about facebook, or all of the new changes to the layout etc (are they even new? They’re new to me!). So if I start, “liking” photos of your dead uncle :-( or accidentally delete a heartfelt message from you, please bear with me, I don’t really know the, “rules” yet, so it’s going to be learning process.

What are you waiting for? You could be my first friend! Err, “like”? I’m not stuck up, I promise I’ll like you back! Here’s a Link to my page-Or click on the facebook icon I added on the sidebar at the top of the page.

I think Facebook jumped the shark a while ago. Most people I know don’t use it anymore. Our site has a facebook page, but it generates precisely 0 traffic. I don’t even know why that’s a metric for site rankings…

One piece of advice – use twitterfeed to auto post your posts to the page. It’ll save you time and effort if you have negative desire to be on facebook. =)

Yeah, I’m not sure if it will be more work than it’s worth, but I’ll definitely set up the auto post you mentioned to make things a little less labor intensive.

Thanks for the links, I am in good company.

    1. KK

      You bet.

I do pretty well on Twitter, but my Facebook page seems stagnant. No one comments on it, no one follows links. I don’t really get it!

    1. KK

Me neither to be honest, but I figured I’d give it a shot to see how things go. If nobody likes it I’ll probably just post my links via the autofeed Mrs. Pop mentioned and call it good.

I don’t have a facebook page for my blog. It’s just not my thing! ;)

    1. KK

I think that’s the general consensus. This might be short lived ;-)

Welcome to the Facebook page world. I have one, but it doesn’t do much for me. I just push my twitter updates to Facebook. Thanks for including my mention.

    1. KK

You’re welcome. Funny how everybody is saying the exact same thing. I figured a lot of folks used facebook, I guess that’s just for their personal pages/friends, not for blog related stuff.

I recently started my Facebook for my blog just 2 months ago. It is nice to have, but I don’t really use it that much.

    1. KK

Seems like most folks don’t put much energy into it/get much interaction from facebook. This is good feedback to have so I don’t feel like a failure if nobody stops by ;-)

Nothing wrong with increasing your presence around the web!

Can’t hurt, but sounds like it doesn’t really “help”. I’m fine with it in either case.

I think facebook used in certain ways can still have value. I read many times that leads from fb convert at a higher percentage than any other source. I have not started using fb on my site but I will do a trial run and see the benefits.

    1. KK

Interesting, I wonder about the conversion and if that’s specific to certain types of pages/sites? May as well start one, if nothing becomes of it at least you tried, and who knows it might be wildly successful. Some folks seem to have had really good luck with facebook. I know a lot of the coupon and lifestyle bloggers have pretty big and pretty active followers on facebook.

I have a FB page for the site but I don’t do much with it. I just use it as another way to get the word out there. I know people who do everything in facebook including emails etc. If I can reach them too than bonus.

    1. KK

I sort of see it as an added bonus too. If I don’t have any followers/interested readers from facebook, nothing lost nothing gained. If I do, awesome.

  10. Jon @ MoneySmartGuides

Thanks for the mention. I too was debating about Facebook when I first started but decided to give it a go and have been working at building up my followers.

  11. KK

You’re welcome. Even if one person stops by and becomes a reader, that’s a win for me.

  12. Tony@WeOnlyDoThisOnce

Some great reads here for sure. As far as Facebook…it can be used for good or evil. I absolutely love it! Good luck.

    1. KK

I won’t be trying any evil;-) just trying to meet fellow bloggers and share some of my/their work. I guess I overdid facebook when I first got it and then quickly lost interest.

  13. Leslie

I stumbled upon this post but it turned out to be a good find. I, too, have been contemplating an FB page to complement my new site. Though I personally use FB regularly, judging by the comments it seems that for now I think I will put a bit more effort into my site and add FB later. Or maybe outsource it just to get it started.

    1. KK

Thanks Leslie, glad to have you here. Outsources the parts you don’t like, or take a lot of time is always a good option if you have the resources to do it. Right now I have more time than money, so I’m pretty much do everything myself. At some point I might consider outsources certain things I don’t particularly enjoy (the tech side of things for me).
