About

us student debt survivorWelcome!

Who am I? I’m so glad you asked. My name is Kari, but my friends and family call me KK. I’m a thirty-year-old non-profit professional, writer and guacamole aficionado who blogs about my struggles and successes paying off over $30,000 in student loan debt.

I have an adoring boyfriend who humors my frugal antics and a sweet, but spunky rescue pup. We live and work in the greater NYC area and recently bought our first condo. Now that we’re student debt free, we’re saving our pennies and building a solid financial future together.

Hi and Welcome, I’m so glad you’re here!

How much debt did I pay off? $30,304.87. But who’s counting right? I paid off about $5,000 over the course of about two years, then really buckled down after graduate school and paid off the remaining $25,000 in 2 years.

How did I, “do it”? Well… there were a lot of things I had to change about my lifestyle. But the three biggest and most obvious changes were adjustments to the ways I made, saved and spent money. When I realized I was living a life I couldn’t afford (and was going to be in debt until I was 40+ eek!) I started working extra jobs, making budgets and cutting coupons.

What’s Student Debt Survivor (SDS) all about? SDS is where I share my experiences paying off debt, my future financial goals and general musings about my life and money. Let’s face it, there are millions of people drowning in student debt…but you don’t have to be one of them!

The road to debt freedom is rocky, but with patience and perseverance, you too can be a student (or consumer) debt survivor!

You paid off $25,000 in 2 years?? That’s incredible. Good for you!!

Yup, it was not easy and I cut out a lot (seriously, people made fun of me ;-)) but that’s OK because it’s so worth it in the end.

Ay yi yi. Huge reality check. On my current student loan payment plan I’m about 12 years from being debt free. That puts me at 40!!!! Yikes, I definitely don’t like the idea of being in debt until 40. Ugh, just something about that number, lol.

My situation is a little different *coughdeepercough* and I am already working hard at hammering it down, but maaaaaan, time to look at ways to shave a few more years off!

Congratulations though, that is a huge success and I really look forward to the day when I can be in the debt free club too!
